Alberta Wheat & Barley Commissions Educate Kids About Food Origins at the Calgary Stampede

July 6, 2023, (Calgary, Alberta) – From July 6 – 16, the Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions will be hosting an educational booth at the Nutrien Western Event Centre. Wally and Betty’s Grain Gallery is part of the Nutrien Ag-Tivity in the City event, and offers children the opportunity to learn where their food comes from and how wheat and barley are sustainably grown in Alberta.

With the modern-day use of tablets and augmented reality technology in the classroom, Wally Wheat and Betty Barley lead kids through a game that educates them on commodity production. In the game, players choose to learn about either wheat or barley and are taken through multiple steps showcasing how their selected crop is grown, harvested and ultimately implemented into end-use products such as pizza dough or cattle feed.

Commission staff and board members with a variety of backgrounds will be in attendance to answer questions and to explain the crop production process.

“Children’s agricultural events are one of the cornerstones of the commissions’ education initiatives,” says Tara Sawyer, commission chair. “They allow opportunities to educate through fun and interactive methods that encourage learning about the processes, industry and different grains. Our goal is to show children the importance of agriculture and how it is connected to the food we eat.”

The Wally and Betty Grain Gallery mobile application is also available to download for free on Apple and Android devices through the App Store and Google Play.
