The Blue Book goes digital: A trusted resource enters a new era

For nearly 50 years, Alberta farmers and agronomists have relied on Alberta’s Crop Protection Guide, better known as the Blue Book, as a go-to resource for making informed crop protection decisions. In June 2026, that trusted tool takes its next step forward with the launch of a new digital app, putting one of the industry’s most respected resources directly into the hands of users.

Developed collaboratively by Alberta Canola, Alberta Grains and Alberta Pulse Growers, the app reflects a shared commitment to meeting farmers where they are. The move to digital follows feedback gathered in 2024, when producers and agronomists identified a growing need for a more accessible, mobile-friendly version of the Blue Book. While the print edition remains widely used, the new app offers an additional option for those looking to access information in real time.

The app was shaped through consultation with producers, agronomists and industry representatives to ensure it meets the needs of users across the value chain. At its core is a comprehensive product database featuring more than 500 registered crop protection products. Users can quickly find key details, including active ingredients, application information and direct links to product labels.

An advanced search function allows users to filter by pest, crop, product name or active ingredient, making it easier to target specific challenges in the field. A comparison tool also allows users to evaluate multiple products side by side, supporting more informed decision-making.

Built with on-farm realities in mind, the app includes offline functionality so users can access information even without a reliable internet connection. It also features familiar Blue Book tools such as herbicide, fungicide, insecticide and seed treatment selector charts, along with guidance on how products work, recommended protocols and best management practices.

The Blue Book has evolved significantly since its introduction in 1977, when it was created to help farmers navigate the transition to metric measurements on chemical labels. Today, it is a comprehensive and annually updated guide that includes hundreds of pages of information on pesticide application, farm safety and agronomic practices. It remains a trusted and science-based resource for Alberta farmers and agronomists.

The new app builds on that foundation while offering added convenience and functionality. Available for download on Apple and Android devices, it will be offered through an annual subscription of $20.

As farming operations continue to evolve, so do the tools that support them. The launch of the app ensures farmers and agronomists have reliable access to the information they need, whether they are in the office, the yard or the field.
