Autumn agricultural planning
Fall is the time to reflect on the successes and challenges in the growing season. It is also a great chance to plan ahead and set up for another growing season. Use the following resources to help wrap up harvest and plan for next year.
Fall agronomic considerations: nutrient management, weed management, crop residue, insect management and more.
Drought conditions: how much N will carry over to next year?
Drought and herbicide carryover: plan your crop rotations ahead.
Winter wheat: what is the optimum growth stage to overwinter?
Ideally, this plant would have three to four leaves, have a tiller or two with developed crown tissue and would be ready to achieve winter wheat’s maximum yield potential next spring.
Soil sampling: when, where and how?
Sign up for the Harvest Sample Program
Get an assessment of your grain’s quality by the Canadian Grains Commission this fall.
The Harvest Sample Program is a voluntary program for Canadian grain producers. When you sign up, you’ll receive a Harvest Sample kit annually that contains envelopes for sending in samples of your crop at no cost to you. The program benefits both growers and the grain industry. Growers can better understand the grain quality to make marketing decisions, and the grain industry gets a clearer picture of the grain quality across Canada.
The deadline to sign up to participate for this crop year is November 13. CGC accepts samples until November 30.
Results are available within 20 business days from when CGC receives your samples.
