Alberta Wheat Commission 10 Year Anniversary

This past summer, on August 1, 2022 marked ten years of marketing freedom for western Canadian farmers with the end of the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB). The Marketing Freedom for Grain Farmers Act was tabled by the Harper Government on October 18, 2011, received Royal Assent on December 15, 2011, and the new era of grain marketing was effective on August 1, 2012 with the formation of the Alberta Wheat Commission (AWC).

On March 15, the two commissions - Alberta Barley and the Alberta Wheat Commission (AWC) hosted a virtual Town Hall session to garner feedback about the proposed plan regulation of the one formal entity.

Barley producers can claim 11 per cent SR&ED credit on their 2022 taxes

Barley producers who pay check-off through Alberta Barley and do not request a refund are eligible for an 11 per cent tax credit through the Scientific Research and Experimental Development Fund (SR&ED) program for their investment in barley research and development (R&D) projects. 

The Alberta Wheat Commission announces 2023 executive

Following the Alberta Wheat Commission’s Annual General Meeting held this week in Edmonton, Alberta, during the CrossRoads Crop Conference, the commission is pleased to announce the 2023 executive team including Greg Sears as chair, Jason Lenz as vice-chair, and Shawn Jacula as second vice-chair.

Alberta Barley and the Alberta Wheat Commission host an Amalgamation Town Hall

The Alberta Wheat Commission and Alberta Barley are moving forward with the next step to complete the amalgamation by hosting a virtual town hall event to garner feedback about the proposed plan regulation on March 15, 2023.

During this one-hour online session, farmers will learn about the proposed new commission plan regulation including changes from existing wheat and barley plan regulations. Farmers will also gain insight into the amalgamation critical path forward as well as what has been completed to date. Other highlights include the announcement of the nominated interim board and an overview of the additional parts of the regulations.
