From field to finance: How FarmCash and the Advanced Payment Program keep producers ahead
For Canadian farmers, cash flow is more than a convenience. It is the lifeline that turns opportunity into success. Whether cultivating crops, raising livestock, or managing a beekeeping operation, unpredictable markets and seasonal costs create constant pressures. In this high-stakes environment, having the right support at the right time can make all the difference. That is where the FarmCash Advance Program steps in.
Turning Potential into Practical Support
FarmCash, a trusted administrator of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Advanced Payment Program (APP), provides more than convenient access to cash. With years of experience and a knowledgeable team, FarmCash helps producers access advances based on anticipated or actual yields of crops, honey, livestock, and specialty products. This financial flexibility allows farmers to cover operational costs, invest in equipment, and make strategic decisions with confidence.
Understanding the APP
The APP is a federally backed initiative that provides agricultural producers with low-interest cash advances, helping them market commodities at the most advantageous time. Producers can access up to $1 million per program year, based on the value of their agricultural products, with the federal government typically covering interest on the first $100,000 advanced (Government of Canada).
Recent enhancements to the program, announced on September 5, 2025, allow farmers to access up to $500,000 interest-free for the 2025 and 2026 program years. This includes $250,000 for any eligible commodity, plus an additional $250,000 exclusively for canola, reflecting the government’s commitment to supporting strategic agricultural industries.
Who Can Access the APP
To be eligible for the APP, you must be either a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or a corporation, cooperative, or partnership where the majority ownership is held by Canadians or permanent residents.
You also need to:
- be of the age of majority in your province,
- have produced or be producing and own the agricultural product, and
- be responsible for marketing it.
For corporations, cooperatives, or partnerships, at least one stakeholder must meet the provincial age-of-majority requirement.
Supported Products and Advances
The APP covers over 500 crop and livestock products across Canada, offering a wide range of agricultural commodities, including grains, oilseeds, fruits, vegetables, cattle, hogs, sheep, bison, specialty animals, bees, honey, maple syrup, fur pelts, and cervid antler velvet. FarmCash administers advances for 50+ key commodities, giving producers reliable access to funding for a core set of eligible products.
Advances are calculated based on the anticipated value of agricultural products that are either currently being produced or in storage. Producers can receive up to 50 percent of the expected value, providing critical cash flow when it matters most.
All advances must be secured, with producers offering the agricultural products themselves as collateral. For pre-production and livestock advances, coverage under one or more eligible business risk management programs such as Crop Insurance, Livestock Price Insurance (LPI), AgriInsurance, AgriStability or GARS may also be required. This combination of security and federal support ensures producers can access funding confidently while managing operational risk.
How Repayment Works
APP advances are repaid as producers sell the agricultural products on which the advance was made. Repayment must generally occur within 30 days of receiving payment from the sale or by the end of the production period outlined in the repayment agreement.
Most products have an 18-month repayment period, while cattle and bison have 24 months. Repayments are applied first to the interest-free portion covered by the federal government, followed by interest-bearing amounts, penalties, and any outstanding fees.
Producers have multiple repayment options, including bill payments, EFT, wire transfer, e-transfer, mail, or through authorized grain dealers, making it easy to manage cash flow and stay on track (FarmCash Advance).
Roles of Administrators and the Federal Government
APP administrators like FarmCash operate under annual agreements with their financial institutions and the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. They manage day-to-day program delivery, assess eligibility, coordinate applications, and oversee advances until full repayment. The federal government guarantees the advances, covers interest on the interest-free portion, and ensures program compliance, giving producers confidence in the system.
