Selecting the Right Seed
Using the right seed helps lay the foundation for seeding BMP. Two major components of the right seed:
- The right genetics (variety) that suits the farm’s environmental conditions and management.
- High quality seed. Being aware of the germination per cent, vigor and disease to make the most of the seed lot.
Alberta Seed Guide is a valuable source to help growers select the right variety. It is an annual publication providing information on variety performances based on independent data. See this link for information on the Alberta Seed Guide, and how to get full value from it.

Seed testing is crucial to know what you are working with when it comes to your seed lot. Seed testing provides farmers with vital information regarding seed-borne disease, TKW, germination per cent and vigor. Testing of seed-borne disease helps limit the introduction of pathogens into a field as well as provide potential indication of the need for seed treatment. TKW and germination rate are important in seeding rate calculations. See the list of accredited seed testing labs and find the labs in your area.
